Down Syndrome Research Foundation
The Down Syndrome Research Foundation was formed in 1995 in response to the need, expressed by parents and professionals, for detailed and research-based information for themselves and for the community at large. Although based in British Columbia, the DSRF, by using technology to reach out to the Community, has found an audience across Canada.
Our mandate is to empower people with Down syndrome to :
* achieve their potential,
* lead independent and fulfilled lives, and
* participate fully in the communities in which they live
We do this
* through the development of educational and training programs,
* by disseminating information and research results,
* by providing clinical support services,
* by collaborating with other resource centres and community service providers, and
* by raising funds to support a broad spectrum of research projects
What we do
DSRF services, programs & facilities
* A resource library providing reference, research, referral services, and a lending library staffed by a fulltime librarian
* Web site with extensive information resources and Down syndrome events and program information
* Production and distribution of various publications including a DSRF information package and a quarterly Newsletter containing articles, research updates, news from the community, and article abstracts
* An informational CD ROM - Down syndrome: Issues & Interventions
* Canadian population registry for individuals with Down syndrome
* Academic and Social Development Program for College Age Students
* Summer School Program for teens and young adults
* Educational videoconferences connecting communities and specialists
* Research: development and support of research projects pertaining to Down syndrome
* Research : British Columbia site location for an international multi-centered Vitamin E Study
* Support of external projects, such as Camp Talkalot, a speech and language summer program in Toronto
* Support of fundraising and public awareness events, such as the annual DSRF Run Up for Down Syndrome
